In the fourth of our series, Michael van Gerwen chooses his 2017 World Championship semi-final clash against Raymond van Barneveld as his game.
Van Gerwen went into the championship ranked claimed the World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, Grand Slam and Premier League titles which year.
He had beaten Darren Webster, Cristo Reyes, Kim Viljanen and Daryl Gurney to set up a clash.
The group traded blows in a opening five places before Van Gerwen opened a two-set lead up.
« I felt quite great as it was likely the best tournament I have played in my entire life, » explained Van Gerwen. « It was really important for me to perform well against Raymond and I had to I would have missed this match. »
After heading 4-2 up MVG did not look back, producing one of the greatest performances the Ally Pally has ever witnessed, averaging a championship record 114.05 and narrowly missing double 12, en route to a comprehensive 6-2 victory.
« It was pleasant to overcome Raymond, I hadn’t won anything after that, but it gave me confidence for the championship, and I played well afterwards also. »
Van Gerwen end Gary Anderson’s reign as world champion, beating his second world title to be claimed by The Flying Scotsman 7-3 and would take that form.
It is not very long to wait until darts is back on Sky Sports, the World Grand Prix gets underway on Sunday, October 6 at Dublin’s Citywest Arena and seven days of policy continues until the closing on Saturday.
